Hopping into success - LWHS students launch Roo Crew Tutoring program to support younger learners

A new student-led initiative is making a meaningful impact across schools in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD). Roo Crew Tutoring, co-founded by Lake Washington High School juniors Aanya Joshi and Leah Fernando, brings high school students together with fourth and fifth graders at Twain Elementary for weekly tutoring and mentorship sessions. Through a combination of homework help, classwork support, study skill development and engaging learning activities, the program helps make academic support more accessible while fostering enthusiasm for learning.

Beyond academics, Roo Crew emphasizes confidence-building and the power of positive peer relationships. Organized entirely by students in partnership with Key Club volunteers, the program offers high school tutors’ valuable leadership and service experience while creating a welcoming and supportive environment for younger learners. By building meaningful connections, promoting student ownership and supporting personalized learning experiences, Roo Crew reflects the mindsets and skills LWSD believes our graduates should possess to be successful after graduation. Using engagement, connection and individual growth skills to run this program defines the true meaning of these students being future ready.
